How much climate finance is provided, where does it go, and who can access it?
UNFCCC COP29 is a crucial moment for advancing a new goal for climate finance making it one of the most salient and likely also controversial topics during negotiations. This session aims to equip COP-participants with evidence on this often-politicized issue.

This session will explore the volume of climate finance provided, distributional aspects, as well as questions on access to climate finance from a bilateral and multilateral perspective. We will present the latest evaluative findings on developments in terms of the finance volume and thereby contribute to improving reporting transparency. In addition to the volume of finance provided, the session will draw attention to distributional aspects: Is the money going to the most vulnerable groups? Is it directed towards instruments and sectors that are likely to have the biggest mitigation impact? How well is financing aligned to national priorities stated in current NDCs and what are the prospects for the next round of NDCs? The session will also explore the complexities and challenges surrounding access to climate funds.
